Pasta Bolognese
Pasta Bolognese is a childhood classic, so we've worked hard to make sure ours passes the toddler taste test. To make it extra special we've used macaroni pasta, which is just the right size for little hands and mouths, and we've topped it with beef and pork mince and lentils in a yummy herby tomato and veg sauce, which contains 4 different types of veg.

For the Bolognese sauce:
- 2 tbsp rapeseed oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 55 g carrot, peeled and diced into 1 cm pieces
- 100 g sweet potato, peeled and diced into 1 cm pieces
- 2 cloves garlic, crushed
- 100 g British beef mince
- 100 g British pork mince
- 75 g tomato Puree
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- A pinch ground black pepper
- 300 g chopped tomatoes
- 50 g cooked green lentils
- 400 ml low salt beef stock
- 1 tsp yeast extract
- 6 g fresh basil, roughly chopped
- 1 tbsp cornflour
For the Pasta:
- 200 g elbow macaroni pasta, or other small pasta shape
-
Heat the oil in a pan then add the diced onion and cook over a medium heat until the onion is softened and translucent.
-
Add the carrot and sweet potato and cook for 10 minutes until they are beginning to soften.
-
Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute, before adding the beef and pork and cooking until it has browned on the outside.
-
Add the tomato puree, oregano, black pepper, chopped tomatoes, beef stock, lentils and yeast extract. Simmer over a low heat with the lid on for 40 minutes or until the beef is tender.
-
Meanwhile, bring a pan of water to the boil and add the pasta. Cook for 12-15 minutes until the pasta is cooked and is a little softer than you would cook for yourself. Drain and set aside.
-
Mix the cornflour with some water and add to the Bolognese sauce. Stir well and bring up to a simmer for 1 minute to allow the sauce to thicken.
-
Add the chopped basil and the pasta to the sauce and stir through before serving.
The remaining pasta bolognese can be cooled and kept refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen and kept for up to 1 month.
